Notre-Dame de Myans

Myans

Period
Shrine built from 1452, two centuries after the collapse of Mont Granier in 1248
What stands there
12th-century Black Madonna statue in ebony, 70 cm high

A shrine built on the memory of a catastrophe and on faith in a miracle that spared the living.

The shrine of Notre-Dame de Myans owes its origin to one of the greatest natural disasters in the history of Savoy: on the night of 24 November 1248, a gigantic landslide from Mont Granier buried several villages and claimed around 1,500 victims, the flow halting, according to tradition, just in front of a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin. The survivors saw in this a miraculous sign, and Marian devotion grew on the site until the building, from 1452, of the present shrine, entrusted to Franciscan friars from Belley. The shrine houses a 12th-century Black Madonna statue in ebony.
