Grottes du Cerdon

Labalme

Period
Upper Palaeolithic (Magdalenian, approx. 15,000-12,000 years ago)

A cool plunge into the rock of the Bugey, following in the footsteps of the last hunter-gatherers of the Palaeolithic.

Carved into the cliffside above the Oignin valley, in the Bugey, the Grottes du Cerdon extend across the communes of Cerdon and Labalme. The site is an important archaeological deposit: it served as a refuge for Magdalenian groups, the last major culture of the Upper Palaeolithic. Developed for visitors, the caves now offer an underground route punctuated by mineral formations and vast chambers, complemented by a viewpoint overlooking the valley. The site ranks among the major natural sites of the Bugey, not far from the Pertes du Rhône.

Getting there : Developed caves open to the public in the communes of Cerdon and Labalme, in the Bugey; visitor route with a viewpoint over the Oignin valley. Approximate coordinates (entrance to the tourist site).

Opening times and access details are given as a guide only: check before you set out.
