What stands there
1 chapel and 1 commemorative stele, at the pass where Roland met his death in 778 according to legend

Distinct from the collegiate church of Roncesvalles 1.3 km lower down the valley, this ensemble marks the Ibañeta pass itself, associated with the battle of 778 in which Roland perished according to the Song of Roland. A first chapel is attested here from the 11th century, destroyed and rebuilt several times; the present building, modest and modern, dates from 1965 and bears a trilingual dedication to the Virgin of Roncesvalles. A stone stele dedicated to Roland stands on a neighbouring rise.
