Nicknamed "la Bonne Mère" (the Good Mother), traditional protector of Marseille's sailors and fishermen, this Romano-Byzantine basilica by the Protestant architect Henri-Jacques Espérandieu was consecrated in 1864 on the site of a chapel founded in 1214 and a fort built by Francis I in 1536. Its gilded statue of the Virgin and Child, 11.2 m tall, dominates the city from a 41 m bell tower. Restored between 2001 and 2008, it draws around 2 million visitors a year, making it one of the most visited monuments in Marseille.
