Taennchel (Rocher des Géants)

Thannenkirch

Dimensions
4 km ridge, summit of the Rammelstein at 989 m; Rocher des Géants at 949 m bearing around a hundred cup-marks
Period
Dry-stone wall of 2,300 m mentioned as a property boundary as early as 1473, with no confirmed prehistoric dating
What stands there
1 rocky ridge with carved cup-marks and a long dry-stone wall known as the "Mur Païen" (Pagan Wall)

This sandstone ridge facing Haut-Kœnigsbourg bears the Rocher des Géants (Giants' Rock), carved with around a hundred cup-marks, and a 2.3 km dry-stone wall nicknamed the "Mur Païen" (Pagan Wall). Contrary to a reputation as a "sacred mountain" widespread in esoteric circles, the oldest documented mention of the wall, in 1473, describes it as a simple stone hedge marking the boundary between the lordships of Ribeaupierre and Bergheim — its prehistoric origin is not confirmed, and only the cup-marks are clearly of ancient workmanship.
