Abbaye Notre-Dame de Boscodon
Crots
Established fact: the abbey of Notre-Dame de Boscodon was founded in 1142 by cenobitic monks of the Order of Chalais, thanks to donations from the lord Guillaume de Montmirail; its Romanesque church, of great architectural sobriety, has been listed as a monument historique since 1974. According to local legend, belonging to the folklore of the Embrunais and without attested historical value, Saint Arey, bishop of Gap (6th–7th century), attacked by a bear that had killed one of his draught oxen, is said to have tamed the beast and made it his companion; the bear then withdrew to a spring in the forest of Boscodon, still known today as the "fontaine de l'Ours" (Bear's Spring), in the immediate vicinity of the abbey.
