Sanctuaire Notre-Dame du Laus
Saint-Étienne-le-Laus
According to Catholic tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared many times between 1664 and 1718 to the young shepherdess Benoite Rencurel in this valley of the Gapencais — a story of popular devotion belonging to faith, not to verifiable history. An established and verifiable fact: on 5 May 2008 the Bishop of Gap, Jean-Michel di Falco Leandri, officially proclaimed the 'supernatural origin' of these events, an exceptional canonical recognition, the first in France since Lourdes (146 years earlier). Raised to the rank of minor basilica in 1894 by Pope Leo XIII, the shrine today receives between 120,000 and 200,000 pilgrims a year.
