One of the five great Romanesque basilicas of Auvergne, known for its chevet with radiating chapels and its Mozarabic-style mosaic of volcanic stones. The present statue of the Black Madonna, in walnut painted ebony-black and 31 cm high, is a copy made in 1734 by the sculptor Pacquin, inspired by Byzantine Virgins in Majesty; devotion to an earlier Black Madonna on this site is attested as early as 1468 under Louis XI, the original having since disappeared. The basilica is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela.
