Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Cahors
Cahors
Dimensions
two domes on pendentives rising to around 32 m, among the widest domed naves in France
Period
High altar consecrated in 1119 by Pope Calixtus II; Flamboyant Gothic cloister rebuilt 1497–1504
What stands there
north portal carved with a tympanum of the Ascension (after 1140)
A stage on the Via Podiensis, the cathedral has one of the rare French naves vaulted with two great domes on pendentives, an architectural solution of Byzantine inspiration uncommon in French Romanesque. The Flamboyant cloister, rebuilt at the very end of the 15th century, contrasts with the sobriety of the Romanesque nave. Together with the neighbouring Pont Valentré — a 14th-century fortified bridge spanning the Lot — it forms one of the Cahors ensembles listed by UNESCO in 1998 as part of the routes to Compostela.
