Estry (Valdallière)

Dimensions
girth 11.5 to 12 m, hollow trunk
Period
Estimated at between 1,000 and 1,800 years old depending on the source; documented by botanists in 1842, 1892 and 1894
What stands there
1 yew

A yew planted in the middle of the cemetery surrounding the little church of Estry. Local tradition has it that it was hollowed out one stormy day while acting as a lightning conductor to protect the church — botanists see it rather as natural hollowing due to age. It has served as an improvised baptismal font and as a meeting place for parish councils and communal transactions when the church was too small. It has held the "Arbre remarquable" (Remarkable Tree) label from the association A.R.B.R.E.S since 19 September 2009. Approximate coordinates (centre of the communal cemetery).
