Chapelle Saint-Sixte d'Eygalières

Eygalières

Period

What stands there
A roumavage on Easter Tuesday, from the village church

Two kilometres from Eygalières, the chapelle Saint-Sixte stands on a rocky plateau surrounded by cypresses. It is Romanesque and dates from the 12th century. A regional page says it was built on the site of an ancient sanctuary, near a spring. Another guide names it as early as 1155. The projecting porch, the hermitage and the walled garden are of the 17th century, and the porch is dated 1629 by this guide. Every year, on Easter Tuesday, the inhabitants climb from the parish church to the chapel for the roumavage. This Provençal word comes from ‘Roumiéu viage’, the journey to Rome. A mass is said at the chapel every Thursday, from the first week after Easter to All Saints' Day. The guide does not know which of the popes named Sixtus is honoured, and no source read says who lived at the hermitage.
