La Correrie et le musée de la Grande Chartreuse

Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse

Dimensions
On the route du Désert, above Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, two kilometres below the monastery, where the cars stop
Period
Lower house of the lay brothers since the origins of the Chartreuse (1084); present buildings of the 17th to 19th centuries; museum set up in 1957; refurbished from 2009 to 2012
What stands there
The former house of the brothers, where the museum shows what the monastery hides: a cell, the cloister, and the painted portraits of all the charterhouses

From Bruno onwards, the Chartreuse was divided into two houses: above, the fathers in their cells; below, the correrie, where the lay brothers lived, with the workshops, the stables and everything that makes the noise of work, kept at a distance from the silence. The Correrie of the Grande Chartreuse is that place, two kilometres below the monastery; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The road is closed to cars at this point and, in 1957, a museum was opened there to show visitors what they would not see higher up. One walks through a reconstructed cell, the small two-storey house with its workshop and its garden where the Carthusian spends his days, the cloister and the chapel, and learns about a monk's day, the night office and the silence. The most singular piece is the collection of charterhouse maps: seventy-nine paintings, mostly painted in the 17th century at the request of Dom Innocent Le Masson, the prior who rebuilt the monastery after the fire of 1676, and which depict, seen from the sky, the charterhouses of Europe. The museum holds the 'musée de France' label; it was refurbished from 2009 to 2012.
