Castels et Bézenac

Dimensions
Romanesque nave, choir with carved capitals
Period
13th century, priory from 1276
What stands there
cemetery containing the grave of Marie-Jeanne Grave

Only a few hundred metres from the priory and the chapel of the apparitions at Redon-Espic, both already in the app, this 13th-century Romanesque church was first dedicated to Saint Clair before becoming a priory in 1276, attached to the monastery of Saint-Cyprien. It then passed under the protection of the powerful lords of Beynac in the 15th and 16th centuries — the same family found at the château de Beynac and in the legend of Commarque, also in the app. Its choir, vaulted with a semi-dome, rests on columns adorned with carved capitals depicting winged monsters. In its cemetery lies Marie-Jeanne Grave, the young shepherdess to whom the Virgin is said to have appeared in 1814, a few hundred metres away.
