Réalville
Réalville
Réalville, Regalis villa, the "king's town", is the latest of the royal bastides of the Tarn-et-Garonne: Philip the Fair founded it in 1310 or 1311, in the plain of the Aveyron between Montauban and Caussade, at the place called Gardemont, and peopled it with the inhabitants of Almont, a hilltop village abandoned for the purpose and whose materials served to build the new town. The charter of customs, granted by a decree dated at Poissy, stands as its birth certificate. The bastide was set up against the very old Benedictine priory of Cayrac and near the Cistercian abbey of Saint-Marcel. It has kept its arcaded place Nationale, lined with old houses of brick or half-timber, whose façades and roofs are inscribed as monuments historiques together with the square itself. The mound of Almont still holds an underground refuge. Under the Revolution, the king's town was called Garde-Mont.
Getting there : Free access to the town; the arcaded square is the heart of the village.
