Nègrepelisse
Nègrepelisse
Nègrepelisse, the "black fur" of the charcoal-burning woodcutters of the forest of Tulmonenc, lies on the Aveyron fifteen kilometres north-east of Montauban. Wikipedia counts it among "the 35 bastides of the Tarn-et-Garonne": a royal bastide founded in 1273 by paréage with the lords of Bruniquel, it received from Philip III a communal charter of 78 articles, held to be the most complete in the department. A Calvinist stronghold, the town was taken, torn to pieces and burned by Louis XIII in 1622, in reprisal for the massacre of his garrison. The castle, whose main fabric goes back to the 11th century, received Fragonard in 1773; the church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens, classified in 2009, keeps a Toulouse bell tower of 1460, 49 metres high; the temple of 1870, the work of Jules Bourdais, speaks of the Protestant loyalty of the town.
