Bastide de Monsempron-Libos
Monsempron-Libos
Monsempron-Libos brings together two settlements at the confluence of the Lémance and the Lot, at the gates of Fumel. On the height, Monsempron is a former fortified monastic village, developed around a Benedictine priory known from the end of the 11th century and whose settlement appears in the texts only in the 13th century; the imposing priory of Saint-Géraud, with its priory castle and its pilgrimage church, crowns a rocky spur up which climb the steep lanes of the fortified village. Libos, Arribos in the 13th century, was a former river port. According to the Bastides en fête federation, the bastide was founded in 1305 by the king of England Edward I, to consolidate his lands of Guyenne, by a deed of paréage signed with the priors of Monsempron. Wikipedia, silent on this foundation, tells above all of the rise of Libos in the 19th century with the Fumel works and the station of 1863.
Getting there : Free access to the village; the crypt of the priory can be visited. Market at Libos on Thursday morning, according to Bastides en fête.
