What stands there
1480

On the border of the Quercy and the Agenais, Bonaguil rises out of the forest like a stone ship run aground on its rocky spur. It is the last of the great medieval castles: when Bérenger de Roquefeuil, a touchy and litigious baron, set about transforming the old 13th-century fortress around 1480, artillery had already doomed the castles of the Middle Ages. No matter: over forty years he made it an "absolute fortress", bristling with towers and adapted to firearms, essential for understanding French military architecture of the late 15th century. By an irony of history, this defensive masterpiece never suffered a siege. The place has fed many a tale: local tradition speaks of a "white lady", identified as Marguerite de Fumel, said to haunt the keep — visitors and guides report, on November nights, cold presences and pale silhouettes. More tangible are the graffiti carved in the 16th century by soldiers in the guardrooms — hanged men, ships, religious symbols — forming a moving private diary of the garrison. Beneath the castle, the Glacière cave served as a natural larder in case of siege. Now listed as a historic monument, Bonaguil can be visited in every season: you climb up through the hamlet, pass through the barbican, and quickly understand why this "fairy-tale castle" is regarded as a vital witness to the closing years of feudal France.
