What stands there
Romanesque chapel with wall paintings, 18th-century apartments, ramparts and defences

Founded around 1140 in the plain of Berrias, the commandery of Jalès had at first an economic rather than a military purpose, before passing to the Hospitallers after the suppression of the Order of the Temple. Restored as a seigneurial residence from 1740, it had as its commander, from 1782 until his death in 1788, the celebrated Bailli de Suffren, naval hero of the American War of Independence. A few years later, the estate became the scene of the "camps de Jalès", armed counter-revolutionary gatherings of the early 1790s. Today owned by an association and open to visitors, the site also houses a CNRS research unit specialising in the archaeology of the ancient Near East.
