Commanderie d'Arveyres

Arveyres

Dimensions
Fortified house (imposing carved fireplace) and "chai" (wine storage building with niches and carved corbels).
Period
Order founded in 1129; donation of the Arveyres lands in 1231; built in the 13th century. Passed to the Hospitallers in the 14th century after 1312.
What stands there
Templar fortified house and chai, gradually deteriorating (risk of collapse reported)

Some 25 km north-east of Bordeaux, the commandery of Arveyres was founded on lands given to the Order of the Temple in 1231, a century after the order's creation. Its two surviving buildings, a fortified house with an imposing carved fireplace and a wine chai with finely worked niches and corbels, bear witness to a farming estate as much as to a military-religious establishment. Passed to the Hospitallers after 1312, the commandery is today deteriorating for want of upkeep — to the point that a local preservation association has to strictly supervise visits to the interior, which are considered risky. The exterior, by contrast, remains freely accessible.
