What stands there
At least 3 episodes of the statue being hidden and rediscovered (1295–1390, 1558–1605, 1793)

The medieval chestnut-wood statue, according to tradition carved by a crusader knight around 1112, is said to have been hidden and found again several times: buried around 1295 and exhumed in 1390, thrown into a hollow tree trunk in 1558 and rediscovered in 1605 thanks to a restless ox, and finally saved from revolutionary destruction in 1793. These episodes, handed down by the sanctuary's tradition, lie at the origin of a major centre of Marian pilgrimage in the Bordeaux region.
