A fortress founded around 1108 by Duke Alan IV of Brittany on the banks of what would become the Nantes–Brest canal, destroyed and then rebuilt after 1260, La Groulais became the fief of the powerful Clisson family from 1225 to 1407, then passed to the Rohans until the Revolution. Louis, Duke of Rohan, is buried here, and Princess Marie Bonaparte acquired the property in 1918. Listed and then registered as a historic monument from 1977, the château today hosts, from May to September, art exhibitions and events in a former printing works converted into a cultural venue.
