Founded in the heart of the valley of the Cure under the abbacy of Étienne de Toucy, the abbey of Reigny joined the Cistercian order in 1127–1128 as a daughter house of the prestigious abbey of Clairvaux. Its history is turbulent: in 1587, at the height of the Wars of Religion, Huguenot troops set fire to the abbey church, which never fully recovered; the cloister, for its part, disappeared at the end of the 18th century. But Reigny is fortunate to preserve remarkable remains, rare for a Burgundian Cistercian abbey: a vast 14th-century refectory of majestic proportions, an elegant 17th-century dovecote, former monastic dormitories and even the ingenious system of cisterns that once supplied the community with water. Since 2005, passionate private owners have been carrying out a patient restoration of the whole, gradually turning the place into a living estate, today open to guests, weddings and the concerts that ring out in summer beneath the medieval vaults. To stroll through Reigny is thus to walk in the footsteps of the white monks while discovering an abbey carefully brought back to life.
