A vast mantle of beech, oak and conifers thrown over the granite hills of the Armorican Massif, the forest of Écouves culminates at the Signal d'Écouves, at 420 metres, the highest point in all Normandy. A royal hunting ground under the Ancien Régime, this ancient massif remains one of the great forest expanses of Normandy, crossed by long-distance footpaths and crowned by an observation tower at the summit of the Signal.
