Above a meander of the Aveyron, the château of Belcastel piles a thousand years of history onto its rocky spur. A pre-Romanesque chapel dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene — who, local tradition says, came to these parts after the death of Christ — is recorded here as early as the 8th century; between 940 and 987, Oldoric I founded the castle, which enclosed the original sanctuary. Remodelled in the 14th century, sold in 1368 by Marceline de Belcastel to the King of England at the height of the Hundred Years' War, it passed at the end of the 14th century to the Saunhac family, before being abandoned in the early 17th century. It was a ruin overrun by vegetation, registered as a historic monument in 1928, that the architect Fernand Pouillon, a major figure of 20th-century architecture, discovered in 1973: he bought it and devoted more than eight years to an exemplary restoration, completed and inaugurated in 1980, and itself given heritage protection in 2022. Acquired in 2005 by Heidi Leigh, who opened it to the public, the château displays its medieval chapels, prison and wall-walks, and hosts exhibitions of contemporary art at the heart of a village raised entirely from its ruins.
