What stands there
1187: the "miracle of Déols"

Facing Châteauroux, across the Indre, a Romanesque bell tower capped with a stone spire rises alone above the rooftops: it is all that remains standing of the seven bell towers of an abbey once said to be Cluny's sister. Founded in 917 by the lord Ebbes the Noble and placed directly under the protection of the pope, Notre-Dame de Déols was for centuries one of the great monastic powers of Berry. Its fame rests on a single day in the year 1187. War then set Capetians against Plantagenets, and bands of mercenaries were ravaging Lower Berry. Tradition, backed by several medieval chronicles, tells that a soldier, mocking the Virgin carved on the portal of the abbey church, threw a stone that broke the Child's arm: the statue is said to have bled, the blasphemer to have died that night, and the shock to have spread through both camps, helping to bring about a truce. The "miracle of Déols" made the abbey a major pilgrimage: for centuries Berry came to pray to the "Bonne Dame de Déols" — a Marian devotion that Châteauroux still remembers. Ruined by the Wars of Religion and then stripped bare, the abbey is visited today as a great open-air vessel: arcades of the Gothic cloister, chapter houses, a lapidary museum with superb capitals, a medieval garden where a vine symbolises the blood of the miracle. The 3DÉOLS app brings the vanished splendour back to life in augmented reality, and the climb up the bell tower — 90 period steps and a ladder — lays Berry out as far as the eye can see.
