Église Saint-Hermeland de Bagneux
Bagneux
Amid the apartment blocks of the inner southern suburbs, old Bagneux holds a surprise: a great medieval church worthy of a small rural cathedral, often cited as one of the finest in the Hauts-de-Seine. Founded in 1011 on the remains of a 6th-century place of worship — the village, a land of winegrowers, then depended on the chapter of Notre-Dame de Paris —, it was sumptuously rebuilt between 1180 and 1240, at the very time the cathedral was rising, in that pale golden stone of the Île-de-France found again in its vaults. On the west portal, a tympanum carved around 1180 depicts the Last Judgement, a rare witness to the sculpture of that period in the Paris suburbs. Its dedication is a delightful puzzle: Hermeland (or Erblon) was a 7th-century abbot, a monk of Fontenelle sent to found the abbey of Indre, on an islet in the Loire near Nantes — a saint of the West, almost unknown around Paris. The parish, attached to this distant patron, even obtained a fragment of his relics in 1849, still honoured today. Listed in the famous list of 1862, the very one that protected the great monuments of France, the church has regained all its splendour after a complete restoration finished in 2020. People come here for a distillation of Île-de-France history: the wine-growing village, the shadow of Notre-Dame, and the memory of a wandering monk from the time of the Merovingian kings.
