Nicht von ungefähr gab Tours der Via Turonensis ihren Namen, einem der vier großen historischen Wege nach Compostela: Hier wurde der heilige Martin bestattet, ein ehemaliger römischer Soldat, der Bischof wurde und im 4. Jahrhundert in Amiens seinen Mantel mit einem Armen geteilt haben soll — ein Gründungsereignis eines Kultes, der sein Grab bereits im frühen Mittelalter zu einer der größten Wallfahrten des Abendlandes machte. Die riesige mittelalterliche Basilika wurde nach der Revolution fast vollständig zerstört; erhalten sind heute nur die Tour Charlemagne und die Tour de l'Horloge, Überreste des romanischen Bauwerks. Das heutige Heiligtum im neubyzantinischen Stil stammt aus den Jahren 1886-1902.
