这处圣所的兴起始于1280年，当时人们发现了一尊橡木的圣母子像，并随即认为它具有神迹的力量。1428年百年战争期间，圣殿（basilique）被英国人摧毁，后来凭着迪努瓦（Dunois）、继而路易十一世的誓愿得以重建；路易十一世把这里当作他最爱的朝圣地，并选择安葬在此而不是圣但尼，与妻子萨伏依的夏洛特（Charlotte de Savoie）相伴——这是对王室陵寝传统罕见的背离。
