Pancheraccia

Dimensions
about 500 m above sea level
Period
Apparition traditionally dated to the 18th century; white marble statue installed in 1852
What stands there
Annual pilgrimage on 8 September, feast of the Nativity of the Virgin

Corsican tradition relates that in the 18th century a girl of twelve or thirteen, separated from her mother while gathering wood, in tears and parched with thirst, saw the Virgin appear to her and make a spring gush forth at her feet. The Virgin is said to have asked her to build a chapel and to have marked her hand with an indelible cross, announcing her death within the year. Not recognised by the Church, this apparition remains an object of popular devotion; the spring still flows, visited every 8 September.
