What stands there
First stone laid on 14 September 1519, a month after the apparition
According to tradition, the Virgin appeared on 10 August 1519 to the woodcutter Jean de la Baume, accompanied by Saint Michael and Saint Bernard, asking him to build a church on the spot. The first stone was laid as early as 14 September 1519, a historically attested fact. Legend also has it that novenas made here by Queen Anne of Austria preceded the birth of Louis XIV in 1638: this tradition belongs to popular belief, not to verified fact.
Getting there : About 4 km south of the village of Cotignac by road, then a short path; car park on site.
