Dimensions

What stands there
11 works stolen in 2001, of which 1 returned in 2016; 9 still sought

In April 2001, the chapel-museum adjoining the church of Saint-Martin at Fridefont was burgled: eleven old statues, including a locally venerated Black Madonna, disappeared. Fifteen years later, in 2016, the mayor received an anonymous parcel sent from the Isère under a false address: inside was the statue, restored. It has returned to its place in the original building, now better protected. Nine other stolen works remain untraced; a fact documented by the press, not an ancient legend.
