Chapelle Notre-Dame de Layre

Ambert

Dimensions
Small rural chapel rebuilt in 1863, without a monumental bell tower
Period
Statue venerated before 1631; oratory in 1660; chapel in 1671, destroyed in the Revolution; rebuilt in 1863
What stands there
A statue of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, the only object venerated on this site

According to the Abbé Grivel, a statue of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, hidden during the Wars of Religion, was carried off by a flood at the Layre mill in 1631: it is said to have floated without ever drifting away from the spot. When it was to be transferred to the church of Saint-Jean in Ambert, the bearers appointed for the task are said to have suddenly found themselves unable to move it, a sign interpreted as her wish to remain in place. A chapel was built on the spot as early as 1660. An account from local tradition, not historically verified.
