Chapelle Notre-Dame du Charmaix

Modane

Dimensions
Modest building with a single nave and a bell-gable, the bell-gable's height estimated at about ten metres
Period
Founded in 1401; present statue later, despite a tradition dating it to the 5th century; restored in the 20th century
What stands there
33 miracles recorded between the 16th century and 1643 according to the account by Father François d'Orly

According to tradition, a pilgrim escaped an avalanche near the Col de la Roux and vowed to build a chapel. A 19th-century account relates that after a plan to move the building, threatened by a torrent, the old chapel reappeared intact the next day while the new one vanished, a sign that the Virgin wished to stay there. Founded in 1401, the sanctuary claims thirty-three cures attested from the 16th century onwards; accounts of tradition, not verified facts.
