Chapelle Notre-Dame de l'Aubépine (Arantza)

Ainhoa

Dimensions
Rural chapel at 390 m above sea level; commemorative grotto laid out 50 m below in 1897
Period
Medieval legend; chapel razed in 1814 and then rebuilt in the 19th century
What stands there
Replica of the Basque sanctuary of Aránzazu (Gipuzkoa, Spain)

According to tradition, the Virgin appeared to a young shepherd near a spring, beneath a hawthorn bush ("arantza" in Basque) — an account modelled on the legend of the Spanish sanctuary of Aranzazu. The chapel, destroyed in the Revolution and then razed in 1814, was rebuilt in the 19th century; a grotto was laid out in 1897 on the supposed site of the apparition. No source contemporary with the apparition is known: the account rests on oral tradition alone.
