Chapelle et vestiges de l'abbaye Notre-Dame de la Roche

Lévis-Saint-Nom

Dimensions
about 165 m above sea level (plateau of the upper Chevreuse valley)
Period
12th–13th century (foundation), ruined at the Revolution
What stands there
1 founding statue mentioned by local tradition

Local tradition, reported since the 19th century, attributes the foundation of the abbey to the miraculous discovery of a statue of the Virgin, unearthed by a plough ox in the 12th–13th centuries. Historians, however, link the building to Guy de Lévis after his victory over the Albigensians, with no demonstrated connection to this episode. Much visited by pilgrims until the Revolution, the abbey then fell into ruin; a statue of the Virgin kept in the neighbouring church perpetuates the memory of this founding legend.
