What stands there
Basilica rebuilt between 1927 and 1931, famous for the gilded Virgin crowning its bell tower
According to local legend, in the 11th century a ewe from a shepherd's flock stopped dead on one precise spot, refusing to go on; digging there, the shepherd is said to have discovered a statue of the Virgin bearing a mark on her forehead. A dispute with the neighbouring villages over possession of the statue was reportedly settled by a cart race, won by Albert. The basilica is named "de Brebières" in memory of the ewe.
