Basilique Notre-Dame de Boulogne

Boulogne-sur-Mer

Dimensions
Dome rising to about 100 m, one of the highest in France for a religious building
Period
Legend placed in 636; present basilica rebuilt in the 19th century (1827–1866)
What stands there
Major pilgrimage of the Middle Ages, compared with those of Le Puy-en-Velay and Rocamadour

According to a tradition recorded as early as the Middle Ages, a boat without sail or crew, borne by angels, is said to have come ashore in 636 at the mouth of the Liane carrying a statue of the Virgin and Child, which then addressed the inhabitants to ask that a church be built. This account, legendary in nature and historically unverifiable, nonetheless founded one of the greatest Marian pilgrimages of the Middle Ages, frequented by sovereigns and crusaders until the Revolution.
