Cradle of Angevin Gothic, the cathedral unites Romanesque solidity with the Flamboyant thrust of its domed vaults.

Cradle of the Angevin Gothic style, the cathedral of Saint-Maurice combines a Romanesque nave with domed Gothic vaults, under the influence of Angoulême Cathedral and the abbey church of Fontevraud. Its towers were completed in 1518 and 1523, while the monumental portals, too badly decayed, were demolished in 1806. The building preserves remarkable stained glass, including the rose windows by André Robin dated 1451, as well as a Baroque baldachin of 1758 inspired by St Peter's Basilica in Rome. The great organ was restored by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll in 1869–1870 before being electrified in 1957–1959.
