Sanctuaire Notre-Dame de l'Osier

Notre-Dame-de-l'Osier

Dimensions
42 m long, Latin-cross plan
Period
1649–1657 (miracle and apparition); 1858–1868 (construction of the present basilica)

The sanctuary of Notre-Dame-de-l'Osier, today a commune in its own right detached from Vinay, owes its origin to an episode at the hamlet of Les Plantés: a first miracle was reported there in 1649, then in 1657 the Protestant Pierre Port-Combet is said to have been granted an apparition of the Virgin. This account, never submitted for official canonical recognition, did not however prevent the rapid growth of a pilgrimage, encouraged by the indulgences granted from the 17th century onwards. The present neo-Gothic basilica, built between 1858 and 1868 by the architect Alfred Berruyer, stands out for its red brick, unusual in the region; 42 metres long and built on a Latin-cross plan, it remains unfinished. It was raised to the rank of minor basilica by Pope Pius XI in 1924.

Getting there : Raised to the rank of minor basilica in 1924 by Pope Pius XI; still an active place of pilgrimage; free admission, commune of Notre-Dame-de-l'Osier (Isère), detached from Vinay.
