The Chambre des Demoiselles is a small cave cut into the Falaise d'Aval at Étretat, historically reached via a narrow passage near the Aiguille and the Porte d'Aval. Since at least the late 19th century the site has been associated with a legend recounted notably by Guy de Maupassant, later taken up by Maurice Leblanc in his novel 'L'Aiguille creuse' (1909) featuring Arsène Lupin. Because of confirmed risks of cliff collapse, the municipality of Étretat has, by order since 28 April 2025, banned access to the cave.

Getting there : Access banned by municipal order since 28 April 2025 (risk of rockfall); visible from the coastal path
