Chapelle Notre-Dame de Vassivière
Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise
Every year, a Romanesque Black Madonna — a copy, the original having been destroyed during the Revolution — is carried in procession from the church of Besse up to this mountain chapel at the "montée" in May or early July, then brought back down at the "dévalade" on the last Sunday of September. One of the most important pilgrimages in France in the 17th century, it drew as many as 20,000 pilgrims in the 19th century. Listed as a monument historique.
