What stands there
1 chaos of granite boulders with popular shapes and names (la Bascule, l'Oratoire, les Pains de Sucre, le Berceau du Diable)

This granite chaos, its shapes worked by periglacial erosion, bears popular names (la Bascule, l'Oratoire, le Berceau du Diable) and inspired George Sand's novel *Jeanne* in 1844. In the early 19th century the local politician Jean-François Barailon claimed the rocks had been "carved by Gaulish druids for bloody rites" — a theory explicitly refuted by Prosper Mérimée and the archaeologist Pierre de Cessac, and to be treated as a 19th-century legend rather than established fact.
