What stands there
high-altitude shrine, one of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites in France after Lourdes

The spring rises exactly where, according to the account of two young shepherds, Mélanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud, a weeping "Beautiful Lady" is said to have appeared to them on 19 September 1846. Previously known but intermittent — it flowed only after heavy rain or snowmelt — it is said to have begun flowing abundantly and without interruption from 21 September 1846, two days after the apparition. The La Salette apparition was officially recognized by the Bishop of Grenoble, Mgr Philibert de Bruillard, on 19 September 1851, making this high-altitude shrine one of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites in France after Lourdes. The pilgrims' use of the water sparked controversy from the earliest years between believers in and doubters of the miracle, controversy still documented by the shrine itself today.

Getting there : reached by a mountain road from Corps (Isère); shrine open year-round, open-air spring in the valley of the apparition
