An apparition of the Virgin to the tailor Claude Allain in 1692 is said to lie behind the neighbouring chapel, built from 1693. The present fountain, with two twin basins surmounted by niches dedicated to the Virgin and to Saint John the Baptist, dates from 1881; small troughs allowed pilgrims to wash their feet before praying. People still wet their eyes here to heal them, and mothers short of milk come seeking a remedy; to throw a coin into the water and see it fall into an opening at the bottom of the basin is taken as a good omen.
