Period
Village formerly named Carentenago, after the river; Lac de Lavaud downstream (dam of 1990)

The river Charente rises in Haute-Vienne, at Chéronnac, in the Périgord-Limousin regional natural park, at 295 m above sea level according to Wikipedia. The village has kept the memory of this kinship: its old name, Carentenago, comes from the river, recalls the tourist entry for Chéronnac. Today there is a photograph captioned ‘Source de la Charente’ and even a ‘Bar de la Source’. The sources consulted do not describe the development of the spring, nor any legend or controversy over its location. After its birth, the river flows twelve kilometres north-west before entering the département of Charente, at the Lac de Lavaud, also fed by the Trèze and formed by a dam built in 1990.

Getting there: Coordinates: OpenStreetMap node ‘Source de la Charente’, near the chemin des Chaumes du Haut (hamlet of Bachellerie, commune of Chéronnac). The condition and development of the spring are not described by any source consulted; exact position and access to be checked on the ground.
