What stands there
principal place of pilgrimage to the Archangel in the Aegean

Tucked away at the head of a secluded cove on the small Greek island of Symi, this monastery dedicated to the Archangel Michael Panormitis ("he who brings back to harbour") is the principal centre of pilgrimage to Saint Michael in the whole of the Aegean, venerated in particular by Greek sailors seeking protection. Although the cult of the Archangel here is ancient, the present building and its tall Baroque bell tower, the highest in all the Dodecanese, date from the 18th century. Sixth link in the Sacred Line of Saint Michael, between Italy and the Holy Land.
