Ancienne abbaye de Grandmont

Saint-Sylvestre

Period
Étienne de Muret (died 1124); Grandmont from 1124-1125; order dissolved in 1772; abbey demolished in 1817
What stands there
Of the mother house of the eremitic order of Grandmont, inscribed remains and a network of ponds survive.

Étienne de Muret, a hermit from the Auvergne, lived in the forest of Muret, near Limoges. He died in 1124. His disciples then left Muret for Grandmont, where they carried his body. A first monastery was built in 1125, under the protection of the English king Henry I. Étienne was canonised in 1189. In 1317, Pope John XXII raised the priory to the rank of abbey, head of the order. The abbey was rebuilt from 1732 to 1768. Four years later, in 1772, the order was dissolved. Demolition then began and resumed in 1817, and the stones were used to build the Limoges central prison. What remains are buried remains, an enclosure wall, a small chapel of 1825 and several ponds that the monks had laid out.
