Ermitage de Val-de-Seine (Notre-Dame)

Baigneux-les-Juifs

Period
Probably 16th century; chapel altered in 1633; hermit's dwelling rebuilt in the 18th century
What stands there
An isolated hermitage in the upper Seine valley, with its chapel of 1633.

The hermitage of Val-de-Seine hides in the upper Seine valley, far from any village. The Inventaire du patrimoine thinks it was built in the 16th century. A scholar, P. Girardot, says it was already there before 1600. The chapel was altered in 1633, and this date is engraved on its portal. The hermit's dwelling was rebuilt in the 18th century. The walls are of limestone and the roof of flat tile. The whole comprises the chapel, the living quarters and an outbuilding. In the chapel, the Inventaire recorded a holy-water stoup and a 17th-century statue of Saint Joseph and the Child. The hermitage belongs to a private owner.

Getting there: Private property, isolated in the upper Seine valley (hamlet of Val-de-Seine, pont de la Callemagne). The chapel and dwelling can be seen from outside; I found no visiting conditions: do not enter without permission.
