Ermitage Saint-Maurice de Greulera

Ille-sur-Têt

Period
Early church mentioned in 1242; present building perhaps of the 17th century; inscribed in 1927
What stands there
A Romanesque chapel remodelled in the 17th century, on a former hermitage site, now private property.

In the hills around Ille-sur-Têt, a chapel bears the name of Saint Maurice. The official record mentions an early church at this spot in 1242. The present building perhaps dates from the 17th century, without certainty. It has a single plain nave, whose last bay forms the flat-ended choir. The wooden roof frame rests on transverse arches, which separate each bay. The record sees in it ‘an example of Romanesque architecture adapted by the 17th century’. The chapel has been inscribed as a historic monument since 24 October 1927. It is private: it is viewed from outside, discreetly. The Mérimée database records it under the name chapelle Saint-Maurice; it is also called the hermitage of Greulera. No hermit's name could be established here.
