What stands there
one of the richest Benedictine abbeys in medieval England

Founded in the 11th century around the tomb of the martyr-king Edmund of East Anglia, killed by the Danes in 869, this abbey became one of the richest and most powerful in England before its destruction during the dissolution of the monasteries ordered by Henry VIII in 1539. Its majestic ruins mark the eastern end of the English stretch of the St Michael Line described by John Michell, who presents it as the final point of an axis crossing the whole of southern England from Cornwall.
